Taiwan Oolong Tea Leaves
Taiwan Oolong teas have received worldwide recognition and are famous for its high mountain oolongs. Much of Taiwan’s annual tea production takes place in Nantou County. However, tea is grown in all fifteen counties of Taiwan.
Competitions encouraged by the Taiwan government in a bid to redirect production toward the domestic market, has given the tea farmers the impetus to produce quality, not quantity and so now 80% of Taiwan’s teas are consumed domestically.
Renowned tea growing areas within Taiwan include Nantou County for its Dong Ding and Si Ji Chun oolongs, Pinlin and Wenshan in Taipei for its Paochongs, and Mount Li (Pear mountain) in Taichung County for its Li Shan oolong and Dong Feng Mei Ren (Oriental Beauty).
Typical flavour profiles vary widely due to the tea type, terroir, processing method, oxidisation percentage but include characteristics such as floral, buttery, sweet, roasted nut, fruitiness, lilac, muscat grape, vegetal, and milky.
